Honey and pears – 4 flavors of prefecture specialties

Suo-Oshima High School Students make salted candy

Second and third year students at Suo-Oshima High School collaborated with a salt company in town to develop a salt candy that combines locally produced salt and special products from Yamaguchi prefecture. The new candy will be released across Japan March 3rd.

The commercialized product is “Ryujin’ salt candy the Setouchi Diamond” They used salt from Ryujin no Sato, a salt manufacturing company in Higashi-Agenosho, Suo-Oshima. In addition to the salty flavor, they have commercialized four different flavors by combining salt with honey from Hirao Town, Shuho pear from Mine City, and Ono tea from Ube.
It costs ¥400 for 1 bag containing 10 candies. They will produce 3,000 pieces and sell them at 40 locations in total, including 16 locations in Suo-Oshima, Iwakuni, Yanai, Yamaguchi City, Hiroshima, and Tokyo.
In April of last year, students embarked on the Yumesio Project,'' which provides them with real-world business experience. Masaaki Murakami, a company representative from Ryujin no Sato, was invited as a lecturer. The three third-year students and six second-year students received advice while learning about business. They worked on everything from product planning to design and market development, then completed the new product. Approximately 50 people, including related parties and parents, attended the launch event February 29th. The students explained the reason for the product name by saying,The candy we made looked like a diamond.’’ Participants who tried the candy were impressed, saying it was delicious'' andI liked the taste of the tea.’’
Leader Yue Miyaji (18) said, Although it was difficult, it was a good experience. I'm glad it turned out to be delicious candy.’’ Haruka Yoshino (18),a third-year student said,I want as many people as possible to buy this candy because it’s filled with special products from the prefecture.’’

What is “Yumeshio Project”?

A collaborative project between students of Suo Oshima High School’s Regional Development Department and Ryujinnosato LLC. This project aims to develop human resources who will support regional revitalization over the long term, with the philosophy of “Being a person first before doing business.” High school students take the lead in planning, developing, and selling products using Ryujin-no-sei, and in the process learn the basics of business and how to be a member of society.

“Our wishes for the Yumeshio Project”

We have learned about the current state of Yamaguchi Prefecture, and feel that although Yamaguchi Prefecture has many attractions and tourist destinations, we are not making good use of them. We hope that by having as many people as possible pick up the Ryujin-no-Shioame “Setouchi no Diamond” product that we have recently developed, we will be able to get people interested in Yamaguchi Prefecture and increase the number of people who visit it. We would be very happy if Ryujin Salted Candy “Setouchi no Diamond” is loved by people and that through this activity it helps the development of our hometown, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Suo-Oshima, the island that nurtured us. We sincerely hope that the students who come after us will inherit this feeling and lead it to further development.

Products created through the “Yumeshio Project”

The product developed in the 2023 Yume Salt Project is a salted candy made with Suo Oshima’s Ryujin no Tate and special products from Yamaguchi Prefecture, and its name is Setouchi Diamond.'' We named the four flavors of candy Seto Inland Sea Diamonds to represent the treasures of the Seto Inland Sea. The first products areRyujin no salt candy” made with Ryujin no salt, Hirao honey salt candy'' made with honey from the Fukumitsu apiary in Hirao town, andAkiyoshi pear candy” made with pear jam from Nishimura Farm in Akiyoshi town. There are four types of candy, including “Ono Tea Salted Candy” made with tea from Yamaguchi Tea Industry in Ube City.

“Conversation with specialty product producers”

In our desire to let more people know about the charms of Yamaguchi Prefecture, we spoke with the producers of Yamaguchi Prefecture’s specialty products used in the recently developed “Setouchi Diamond” and asked about their passion for their products. There are some stories that you wouldn’t normally hear, so please take your time.
